11 days after a new outright record was set, Foiling Kiteboarder Casey Brown takes another 3 minutes and 06 seconds off the Around Jamestown Record

New outright record is 47 minutes and 42 seconds for the 17.8nm course

Casey Brown after he set the Around Jamestown Record

October 30, 2021 – Newport, RIA new outright record was set Saturday, October 30th for the  Around Jamestown Record. Casey Brown on his Foiling Kiteboard, Wyspa Tech, completed his attempt around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 47 minutes and 42 seconds and an average speed of 22.4 knots. This bests the previous record of 00:50:48, set just 11 days earlier by Rob Spets, also on a Foiling Kiteboard.

Casey chose to sail the course south from the start off Fort Adams at 08:59:29 EST. Brown departed in an 18-knot ESE breeze in a slack tide.

This was Casey’s first attempt to set the Around Jamestown Record, however he has been kiting for six years and foiling for the past three.

Brown said on the record, It was fun, pretty perfect conditions other than 7-8 foot waves at Beavertail, but flat the rest of the way. Nice easterly, high teens with a couple of puffs up to 30. There were a lot of fish, I hit about five and crashed, along with three other crashes, but all in all pretty quick. I’ve been thinking about this record for a long time, so I’m just stoked, it’s pretty cool to break it.

I knew I was a close [to breaking the record], I had one crash close to the finish and I thought that might have put me over the edge. It was pretty tough on the legs especially reaching and then deciding how fast to push. If you go quick the entire time, you will crash a lot more and sap energy.

And I think you can probably still take time off the record, maybe get it down to 40 minutes in perfect conditions.”

Brown said on what he enjoys about kiting, It’s pretty cool how quiet it is. Everything kind of unloads. I’ve grown up doing a lot of regular sailing everything loads up the faster you go, but the kite just kind of releases and it’s cool how silent it is.

Foiling Kiteboarder slashes 1 minute and 14 seconds off Around Jamestown Record

New outright record of 50 minutes and 48 seconds for the 17.8nm course takes down record last set in September 2021 by the Mod70 Argo

October 19, 2021  – Newport, RIA new outright record was set Tuesday, October 19th for the  Around Jamestown Record. Rob Spets on his Foiling Kiteboard Skellinger, completed his attempt around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 50 minutes and 48 seconds. This bests the previous record of 00:52:02, held by Jason Carroll’s Mod70 Argo by 1 minute and 14 seconds.

Rob chose to sail the course north from the start off Fort Adams at 12:17:48 EST. Spets departed in an 18-knot WSW breeze at the end of an ebbing tide.

This was Rob’s first attempt to set the Around Jamestown Record, however he had made practice runs in preparation.

Spets said on the record, If I was going to sum it up, it was survival mode for about 60% of the run. I was super over-powered in the beginning, if I had a smaller kite would have flown it. I played it conservatively up the east passage and that was definitely the hardest part trying to hammer upwind and trying to get around the north end when it was nuking.

I had a game plan going into the attempt, it’s something I thought about and looked at for years and I did a couple of practice runs for fun on old equipment. It was really amazing to do it for real and actually get the record in my first record try, I’m kind of blown away.

I had my speed on my watch and I know I needed 22 knots to beat Argo and at the north end I was averaging 19, by the bridge I was averaging 21.5 and I thought ok this is maybe doable and at Beavertail I was at 22 and change, so I thought alright, this last bit is downwind so I can light it up.

The funny thing is there is room for improvement, I hit a school of fish just past the Jamestown bridge and that was my biggest wipeout. There were also a couple of touchdowns so I know there are local guys who could absolutely take it.

Mod70 Argo slashes 1 minute and 35 seconds off Around Jamestown Record

New outright record of 52 minutes and 2 seconds for the 17.8nm course takes down record last set in October 2016

September 2, 2020  – Newport, RI – A new outright record was set Tuesday, September 1 for the  Around Jamestown Record. Jason Carroll’s Mod70 Argo completed their attempt around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 52 minutes and 2 seconds. This bests the previous record of 00:53:37, held by Zach Marks on a foiling kiteboard by 1 minute and 35 seconds.

The crew on Argo chose to sail the course around the island to starboard, sailing south from the start off Fort Adams at 11:34:47 EST. Argo departed in a 22-knot ESE breeze at the end of an ebbing tide.

This was the Mod70 Argo’s first attempt to set the Around Jamestown Record, the team Argo had attempted the record on five prior occasions all in their previous boat, a GC32. This was the first attempt by any individual or team since the record was last set in 2016. On board Argo for the record-breaking attempt was: Brian Thompson, Chad Corning, Charlie Ogletree, Anthony Kotoun, Tom Burnham, Jim Condon, Chuck Norris, Westy Barlow and Ben Bardwell.

Chad Corning said on the record, “I think setting the record was very much in doubt, because if we would have had to tack more than once then I don’t think we would have even beaten Phaedo’s record [Phaedo is also a Mod70 and sailed the course in 56 min 33 sec June 27, 2015], so that was the key to the whole thing. We knew it was a fast trip but didn’t know how fast until we got to the bridge. Jason was definitely a little disappointed to not be on board, but we have some new foils coming and we’re going to take another whack at it this fall. It’s a record that means a lot to us as it was a great way for us to get going when we had the GC32, so we’re keen to try to get the record under 50 minutes.”

On the Attempt he said, “We had been doing laps of Jamestown just as a way to do some focused training and whenever we go out sailing we’re always looking for easterly or westerly and Tuesday the conditions just looked perfect so we decided give it a go.

The angle wasn’t quite right when we first left the dock, but we decided to give it a go anyway, but as we started the wind left shifted about 20 degrees so right out to Beavertail it became 80-90 degrees wind angle which was kind of perfect and it stayed east on the other side of Jamestown and then we were able to gennaker all the way down to the bridge, switch back to the J1 to the north end of the island. What I think did it for us though was a really well-timed tack and lay line once we got on the other side of the island and then it was upwind, close reaching into the finish.”

2016 Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record Recognizes Outstanding Sailors and Record Breaking Times

December 12, 2016 – Competitors who successfully completed and set new records for the  Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record  were recognized at a prize giving party hosted by the IYAC in Newport, RI this past Friday, December 9th. During the span of the five month long competition, 4 attempts were made at ousting the standing record, and Zach Marks of St. Petersburg, Florida, was able to come away victorious, beating the standing outright record set in 2015 by Phaedo3.

On Friday, October 28, 2016, Zach Marks rounded Jamestown on his foiling kiteboard with an elapsed time of 53 minutes and 37 seconds. This time bested the previous record of 00:56:33, held by Lloyd Thornburg’s Mod70 Phaedo3, by 2 minutes and 56 seconds. Marks was awarded his weight of 175lbs in Mount Gay Rum, which is equal to 4.5 cases, for setting the outright record. Marks was unfortunately unable to attend the event due to a prior coaching commitment and, in his absence, the award was accepted on his behalf by, Ben Wilkinson.

On breaking the record, Zach Marks said, “Setting the record for this race was something that was always on my bucket list. The format and prize are so unique. It’s a refreshing break from traditional windward leeward racing.  Thanks to the local Rhode Island support crew who came out to help me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Dave Lussier, who attempted on Bazinga!, an F31, and Matt Reinhardt, who attempted on his foiling kiteboard Delta Hydrofoil, were recognized for attempting the record this year. Both competitors were not able to complete the rounding due to weather circumstances. Skipper Jeremy Wilmot of the M32 Black Boat was recognized for setting the 2016 Multihull 32’ & Above Division with a time of 01:08:42. Black Boat team members Sam Loughborough and Martha Fortin were present to accept their award, two handles of Mount Gay Rum.

On attempting the record, Martha Fortin of Black Boat said,

“This was my first attempt, it was fun! We [lost time in the attempt when we] had an issue with one of our rudders after the start and when we hit a lull where the breeze dropped as low as about 5 knots. For about 6 minutes we were all bodies in, and powering the boat up as much as we could to get through the lull. I definitely hope that we can try again next year, though I think that the new record set by the foiling kite board will be tough to beat in a Marstrom!”

Sam Loughborough of Black Boat added, I did the record once before in the monohull division which was very different than what we did [this year] on the cat. That was a lot of fun. It was a little more fast paced…some hairy times to say the least! Many thanks to Jerry Kirby for lending us the boat for the attempt.”

Foiling Kiteboarder slashes 2 minutes and 56 seconds off Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record

New outright record of 53 minutes and 37 seconds for the 17.8nm course takes down Phaedo3’s record set in June 2015

October 28, 2016 –  A new outright record was set Friday, October 28 for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record. Zach Marks of St. Petersburg, Florida, rode his foiling kiteboard around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 53 minutes and 37 seconds. This bests the previous record of 00:56:33, held by Lloyd Thornburg’s Mod70 Phaedo3, by 2 minutes and 56 seconds.

Marks chose to sail the course around the island to port, sailing north from the start off Fort Adams at 12:00:58 EST. All previous record attempts were set sailing around the island to starboard. Marks departed in a WNW breeze ranging from 20-25 knots at the end of an ebbing tide.

This was Mark’s third attempt to set the Around Jamestown Record. His prior attempts, also on a foiling kiteboard, were 01:09:24 and 01:03:08 in July 2014. He used a 10m F-One foil kite, on 15-meter lines. The board is an Alex Aguera and fitted with a Spotz hydrofoil.

Zach Marks said on the record, “Setting the record for this race was something that was always on my bucket list. The format and prize are so unique. It’s a refreshing break from traditional windward leeward racing. Thanks to the local Rhode Island support crew who came out to help me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

On the Attempt he said, “The attempt was a reach most of the way around, a little upwind at the north end of the island and really, really windy up there and big ocean swell down at Beavertail. Super gusty pretty much everywhere.

I was going underneath the Jamestown Bridge, trying to do a wider groove because you’re getting ready for that blast and then the lull. I kind of got lulled and my lines went really slack and then the kite powered up really quick and I couldn’t bear away enough so I over-foiled and dropped the kite in the water. That’s pretty much the worst place you want to be down because the wind’s so gusty, but luckily [the kite] came up pretty quick. That probably cost me 15-20 seconds. I had a couple of other wipeouts, but nothing yarded [no equipment scattered everywhere] too far.

2015 Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record Recognizes Outstanding Sailors and Record Breaking Times

Screen Shot 2015-11-17 at 1.59.25 PM

November 14, 2015 – Sailors and crews who successfully completed and set new records for the Mount Gay Rum   Around Jamestown Record were recognized at a prize giving party hosted by the IYAC in Newport, RI this past Saturday, November 14th. With five months of attempts and record breaking, only one crew came out on top, setting the new outright record.

On June 27, 2015, Phaedo3 broke the outright record with a time of 56 min and 33 seconds, sheading 2 minutes off of Argo’s record set during the 2014 season. Skipper Lloyd Thornburg was awarded his weight of 170lbs, which is equal to 4.3 cases, in Mount Gay Rum for setting the outright record. High res images can be found HERE.

On breaking the record, skipper Lloyd Thornburg of Phaedo3 said,

“We had only once chance to break the record this year. We’d like to come back next year and do it and we’d like to have a little more breeze, as it was a little light for us. 20 knots of wind out of the west is my dream and I think we could shave another minute or two off it.”

Skipper Jason Carroll of Argo and Carl Funk and Jan Majer of KWYJIBoat were also recognized for their 2015 record attempts. After four attempts, Argo was unable to best their 2014 time, however they did take home top title in the 2015 multihull under 32’ division. In addition, the HT18, KWYJIBoat was recognized for their performance in the 2015 Multihull Under 32’ Division with a time of 1 hour, 46 minutes and 13 seconds.

Carl Funk from both Argo and KWYJIBoat said,

“We took two shots on Argo in the same day [October 28], The first attempt we were pretty far off the pace. The second time we went at it, we were pretty close. We were beating all the goals we set going around the island until we got back to Beavertail and the breeze shut down and that was it for us. The breeze has to stay where you want it the entire way around and that’s the challenge, but Argo will be back out there and there’s a few minutes at least still left in the record.”

In addition to the prizes of Mount Gay Rum, Team One Newport presented each of the skippers with a signature Scrambler jacket and a professional Predict Wind subscription was awarded to Carl and Jan onKWYJIBoat.

Five categories of sailing boats will be recognized to vie for divisional honors with the overall perpetual trophy going to the boat with the outright fastest time. The entry fee is $150.00 per attempt for any vessel 32’ and over, vessels under 32’ the fee is $70.00. A portion of each entry fee will support Sail Newport.

Mod 70 Trimaran Phaedo3 takes 1 minute and 58 seconds off Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record

New outright record of 56 minutes and 33 seconds for the 17.8nm course takes down GC32 Argo’s record set in October 2014

Phaedo3 Crew

June 27, 2015 – Newport, RI – A new outright record and time to beat was set Saturday, June 27 for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record. Lloyd Thornburg of Santa Fe, New Mexico helmed Mod70, Phaedo3, around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 56 minutes and 33 seconds, besting the previous record of 00:58:31 by 1 minutes and 55 seconds. The record setting crew included Brian Thompson, Miles Seddon, Sam Goodchild, Warren Fitzgerald, Sam Bason, and Pete Cumming. They chose to sail the course around the island to starboard, sailing south from the start off Fort Adams at 17:29:48 ET, on an easterly breeze ranging from 10 to 15 knots on the start of an ebbing tide.

Phaedo3, a Mod70 is a 70-foot trimaran, that is in Newport readying for the start of the NYYC Trans-Atlantic Race. The team chose to use the Around Jamestown Record as a training session for the Trans-Atlantic. This was the crew and boat’s first time sailing around Jamestown.

Owner/Skipper Lloyd Thornburg said, “We had been planning to attempt the record as practice before the Trans-Atlantic race start and we had been told it’s very hard to beat the record in the summer as the prevailing winds don’t give you the opportunity. So knowing that, it left us very much in doubt on whether or not we could break the record. But, with an easterly forecast, this really was really the only day to attempt. We decided to delay our start by an hour and a half so we could go down to Beavertail and practice gybing and check the wind on the backside.

We had a smashing start, flying the center hull going approximately 30 knots, but the wind was fluky and light on the backside and we never saw more than 15 knots of breeze. Once we got to the northern tip, the navigator said to us if we’re going to break the record we need to average 20 knots from here on in and we were going 14 at the time. I have to give credit to the guys because they really put their heads down and made it happen, but it wasn’t until we finished that we knew we broke the record.”

Sailors have until October 31st to attempt to break the new outright record and also secure one of the other divisional records. If by October 31st, no other team in any division bests Phaedo3’s outright record time, Phaedo3 will secure the outright record. When asked what he would do with all of the Mount Gay Rum if the record stands through the end of the year, Thornburg replied,if the record holds, I think we’ll take the rum, share it and have a party.”

GC 32 Foiling Cat, Argo, slashes 4 minutes and 7 seconds off Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record

Argo 10-26-14

New outright record of 58 minutes and 31 seconds breaks the 1-hour mark
Top Speed Recorded 37.1 knots

2014 Awards Party November 8th at 7pm at the IYAC in Newport

October 26, 2014 – Newport, RI – A new outright record and time to beat was set today for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record. Jason Carroll of New York City helmed his new GC 32, Argo, around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 58 minutes and 31 seconds, besting the previous record of 01:03:38 by 4 minutes and 7 seconds. The record setting crew included Chad Corning, Mischa Hemmskerk, Mike Barnes, Cameron Appleton and Mike Kuschner. They chose to sail the course around the island to starboard, sailing south from the start off Fort Adams at 11:33:31 ET, on a northwesterly breeze ranging from 20 to 30 knots on an outgoing tide. Video of Argo during today’s attempt can be found HERE.

Argo, a GC 32 is a 32-foot, foiling catamaran and is the first and only GC 32 in North America. Owner/helmsman Jason Carroll, purchased Argo this summer with the goal of having her in the water in Newport in time to break the Around Jamestown Record. The team began putting Argo together on Monday and was able to go for their first sail on Friday. Today was their fourth time sailing around Jamestown and third official attempt at the record.

Owner/Helmsman Jason Carroll said, “We want to congratulate Bronco on their effort and record time set earlier this year. Today was our fourth time around Jamestown, but being able to break the record was only a matter of the wind behaving, which it did. To be honest there could have been a little bit less [wind]. Coming around the top of the Island we hit our top speed of 37.1 knots. I’m happy, but a little bummed that we can’t go sailing again today because we broke both foils during the attempt.”

Sailors have until October 31st to attempt to break the new outright record and also secure one of the other divisional records: monohull and all sailing craft under 32 feet. If by October 31st, no other team in any division bests Argo’s outright record time, Argo will secure the outright record. When asked if the record holds what he he would do with all of the rum, Carroll replied, “Elvis (Carroll’s Gunboat) has a seven gallon rum tank, so we’ll fill that right up.”

Foiling Kiteboarder, Zach Marks, establishes new All Sailing Craft Under 32 feet record with elapsed time of 01:03:08; Misses outright Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record by 30 seconds

July 5, 2014 – Newport, RI – In the wake of Hurricane Arthur, a kiteboarder and an F31 team attempted to break the Mount Gay Around Jamestown Record on July 5th.  A new record for all sailing craft under 32 feet was established, but the overall record set June 11th of this year by Bronco, a Marstrom 32, remained in tact by 30 seconds. Zach Marks of St. Petersburg, Florida helmed his foiling kiteboard, Cash & Burn, around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 1 hour 3 minutes and 8 seconds besting the previous all other sailing craft record of 02:00:29 set on October 24, 2013. Marks chose to sail the course around the island to port, sailing north from the start off Fort Adams at 10:28:04 ET, on a northwesterly breeze ranging from 18-22 knots.

Five hours after Marks’ attempt, Bazinga!, an F31 skippered by Dave Lussier, attempted to break the record as well. Lussier chose to sail around the island to starboard. Lussier and Bazinga! sailed the course in 1 hour 33 minutes and 53 seconds missing the outright and multi-hull record by 31 minutes and 15 seconds.

Zach Marks, who lives in St. Petersburg, Florida and is an assistant sailing coach for Eckerd College has been kiteboarding since 2011, but moved into a foiling board in December of 2013. Marks is working as a sailing coach at Annapolis Yacht Club for the summer and has been following the weather in Newport looking for a good window to attempt the record and the remnants of Hurricane Arthur provided ideal conditions for Marks.

Upon learning of missing the outright record by 30 seconds, Marks decided to attempt the record again yesterday, July 6. Marks second attempt was slower than the first, with an elapsed time of 1 hour 9 minutes and 24 seconds. For the second attempt, Marks chose to sail the course around the island to starboard.

Today a new keelboat record was established, but the overall record, set yesterday, remained in tact. The crew of 20 chose to sail the course around the island to starboard, sailing south from the start off Fort Adams at 12:00:04 ET, on an easterly breeze ranging from 12 to 16 knots on an outgoing tide.

The outright record was set yesterday, June 11th, by Bronco, a Marstrom 32. Bronco’s time around Jamestown was 1 hour 2 minutes and 38 seconds. Bella Mente set out to break that record, but came up 17 minutes and 3 seconds short.

32’ Marstrom Cat slashes 5 minutes and 21 seconds off Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record

New outright record elapsed time 1 hour 2 minutes and 38 seconds

Sailors have until October 31st to vie for the 2014 Multihull, Monohull and Outright Record

June 11, 2014 – Newport, RI – A new outright record and time to beat was set today for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record. Jonny Goldsberry helmed Michael Dominguez’s 32-foot Marstrom, Bronco, around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 38 seconds besting the previous record of 01:07:59 by 5 minutes and 21 seconds. The record setting crew included Tom Loughborogouh, Jono Loughborough, Jonny Goldsberry, Tripp Burd and Emma Creighton. They chose to sail the course around the island to starboard, sailing south from the start off Fort Adams at 14:15:17 ET, on a southwesterly breeze ranging from 10 to 18 knots on an incoming tide.

Last year Bronco broke the overall record on October 10th, 2013 with a time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 17 seconds, only to be beat out by another Marstrom 32, Ultimate Pressure, on October 24th.

Helmsman Jonny Goldsberry said, “Today, was really puffy and a little bit calmer on the backside [of Jamestown], plus this was the first time this crew sailed together, so we felt like we could have done it even faster. We didn’t start a watch so we weren’t even sure what time we had when we finished. We’ll definitely be back to attempt it again before the summer is out.”

Skipper, Tom Loughborough said, “First we want to thank Michael Dominguez for letting us play with his toy. He’s in Los Angeles today, so we called him up when we saw the weather and he gave us the go ahead. We also want to thank Sail Newport for supporting the class and allowing us to be based here. With Sail Newport in mind, on this special day, a big thanks goes to Edgar Cato, we dedicate this one to you.”

Sailors have until October 31st to attempt to break the new outright record and also secure one of the other divisional records: monohull and all sailing craft under 32 feet. If by October 31st, no other team in any division bests Bronco’s outright record time, Bronco will secure the outright record for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record.

2013 Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record Recognizes Outstanding Sailors and Record Breaking Times

November 9, 2013 – Sailors and crews who successfully completed and set new records for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record were recognized at a prize giving party hosted by the IYAC in Newport, RI this past Saturday, November 9th. With five months of attempts and record breaking only one crew came out on top, setting the new outright record. A total of 194 pounds of Mount Gay Rum was awarded to Skipper Jerry Kirby and his winning crew on Ultimate Pressure for their record-breaking attempt.

On October 24, 2013, just seven days before the 2013 window closed to attempt the record, Jerry Kirby and his crew of Ken Read, Kimo Worthington, Mark Kroening and Chris Fortin crossed the Around Jamestown Record finish line in 1hr 07min 59sec. This new and final outright record for 2013 shaved 5 minutes 18 seconds off the previous record. As per the make up of the event the skipper gets their weight in Mount Gay Rum so Jerry Kirby was awarded five cases plus one bottle of Mount Gay Rum as well as a spot on the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown perpetual trophy.

At the prize giving, Jerry promptly gave one case to each of his crewmembers and vowed to be back next year to attempt the record again.

Sailors have until October 31st to vie for the 2013 Multihull, Monohull and Outright Record

October 24, 2013 – Newport, RI – Four boats attempted the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record. Records fell across the board in all categories with boats concurrently breaking the Under 32’ and Monohull records, as well as the Multihull and Outright record.

The first record of the day fell to Billy MacGowan onboard MacX who lowered the under 32’ record from

2hr 17min 36sec to 2hrs 10min 42 sec. Then just 21 minutes later Alex Wadson onboard Manic, the Shaw 6.50, crossed the finish line in a time of 2hr 00min 29sec to stake his claim on the under 32’ division and monohull division.

Outright Record Falls – Jerry Kirby and his crew of Ken Read, Kimo Worthington, Mark Kroening and Chris Fortin, aboard their 32’ catamaran Ultimate Pressure, took advantage of the strengthening afternoon breeze that had shifted into the west to shave 5 minutes 18 seconds off the outright Mt Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record crossing the finish line in a time of 1hr 07min 59sec.

There is still time to try to break the new outright record and also secure one of the other divisional records: monohull and all sailing craft under 32 feet. 32’ Marstrom Cat smashes previous Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record by 34 minutes

New outright record elapsed time 1 hour 13 minutes and 17 seconds

Sailors have until October 31st to vie for the 2013 Multihull, Monohull and Outright Record

October 2, 2013 – Newport, RI – A new outright record and time to beat was set for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record Wednesday.  Michael Dominguez helmed his 32-foot Marstrom, Bronco, around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 17 seconds besting the previous record of 01:47:24 by 34 minutes 7 seconds. The crew chose to sail the course around the island to port, sailing north from the start off Fort Adams, on a southwesterly breeze ranging from 10 to 18 knots on an incoming tide.

Their record-breaking time comes with a last minute decision by the crew to change their course. “As we were out there warming up we saw the westerly moving in, so we changed our game plan and went north first. We tacked at the north end of Conanicut 28 minutes in,” Kotoun said.

The crew was satisfied with their decision as they were able to pick up speed in key areas of the course. Crew member Anthony Kotoun recounted “as we got to the top of the island it got windy, there was low flat water, and we were seeing speeds mainly in the high teens, sometimes in the 20s. We went through the bridge and felt pretty good about that. It was only 10 minutes from the top of the island to the bridge,”

There is still time to attempt to break the new outright record and also secure one of the other divisional records: monohull and all sailing craft under 32 feet. If by October 31st, no other team in any division bests Bronco’s outright record time, Bronco will secure the outright record for the Mount Gay Rum Around Jamestown Record.
